3M VHB Tape

Installation Guidelines

For maximum bond strength the surfaces need to be clean and dry. Through cleaning is best achieved with Acetone (do not use other cleaners: Windex, 409, ArmorAll... they leave a residue). Ideal tape application is accomplished when temperature is between 70°F and 100°F (21°C and 38°C). Initial tape application to surfaces at temperatures below 50°F (10°C) is not recommended.

Bond strength is dependent upon the amount of adhesive-to-surface contact developed. Firm application pressure develops better adhesive contact and helps improve bond strength. 15 pounds of direct pressure is what is recommended by 3M. Please use the square of cardboard provided to push up on your headliner panels because using just your hand may leave an impression in the headliner fabric.

Bond strength increases with time. If applied at 65- 70°F approximately 50% of the ultimate bond strength is achieved after 20 minutes, 90% after 24 hours, and 100% after 72 hours. Higher temperatures achieve ultimate bond strength quicker, so if it's 110°F outside it's okay to install your headliners. Just do so in the shade. It's not recommended put your Jeep in direct sunlight for at least 12 hours after installation if it's hotter than 85°F outside. With an outside temperature of 80°F the surface temperature of your black hard top is about 160°F.

Very Important

Before cleaning your hard top with acetone take the provided sand paper and go over the places where the 3M tape will be sticking. Look at the diagram of where the 3M tape will be going and lightly go over those areas. That will remove any reside that may be on your hard top and having the surface microscopically roughed up will improve the bond of the 3M tape.
After the light sanding clean your top with acetone and apply the 3M tape as per the installation instructions.

Installation of Rear Side Window Panels:

To install the rear window panels you just pull the long adhesive backed Velcro pieces off of the window panels and stick them in place on the hard top. In order to determine the placement of the Velcro pieces slide one of the rear side window panels in place to see where it fits. When you pull it out and look at the placement of the Velcro on the window panel itself it will be apparent where to place the Velcro on your hard top. Do not worry that the Velcro on the panel and the Velcro on the hard top might not match up exactly. It doesn't take much of a connection to hold the window panels in place.

Be sure to clean the hard top area with acetone before applying the Velcro.
