Jeep Wrangler Generations & Model Years Guide
If youโre not sure which Jeep Wrangler you own, this guide will help you identify your Wrangler generation by model year, body style, and key visual differences. Choosing the correct generation matters because headliners, sunshades, Sound Assassin kits, and other accessories are designed to fit specific Jeep models.
Use the guide below to compare Jeep Wrangler JL, JK, TJ, LJ, YJ, and CJ7 models, then select your vehicle to view compatible Hothead Headliners products.
Quick Jeep Wrangler Generation Guide
Jeep Wrangler JL: 2018-Present
The Jeep Wrangler JL is the current Wrangler generation and was introduced for the 2018 model year. It is available in both 2-door and 4-door configurations and includes popular variants such as the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and Wrangler 392 V8. All JL models share the same underlying JL platform, though compatibility may vary depending on body style, roof type, and specific vehicle configuration.
Common JL products include hard top headliners, soft top headliners, sunshades, Sky One-Touch products, Sound Assassin kits, and related accessories. Because JL fitment can vary by roof type, door count, and model year, always choose the product page designed for your exact configuration.
How to identify a JL: Look for the newer Wrangler body style, modern front grille and lighting, updated interior, and 2018 or newer model year.

Jeep Wrangler JK: 2011-2018
The Jeep Wrangler JK was produced from 2007 through 2018, but Hothead separates JK hard top headliner fitment into two groups because the 2007-2010 and 2011-2018 interiors are different. If you own a 2011-2018 JK, choose the later JK collection to find compatible products.
The 2011-2018 JK is available as both a 2-door Wrangler and 4-door Wrangler Unlimited. These models commonly support headliners, sunshades, Sound Assassin kits, and rear side window panels depending on configuration.
How to identify a 2011-2018 JK: If your Wrangler is model year 2011 through 2018 and is not the newer JL body style, it belongs in this later JK group.

Jeep Wrangler JK: 2007-2010
The 2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler JK is the early JK generation. It may look similar to the later 2011-2018 JK from the outside, but the interior and hard top headliner fitment differ. That is why it is important to choose the correct JK year range before ordering.
If you own a 2007, 2008, 2009, or 2010 JK, use the early JK collection rather than the 2011-2018 JK collection.
How to identify a 2007-2010 JK: Check your model year first. If it is a 2007-2010 Wrangler or Wrangler Unlimited, this is the correct JK group for hard top headliner fitment.

Jeep Wrangler TJ: 1997-2006
The Jeep Wrangler TJ was sold from 1997 through 2006 and brought back the round headlights after the square-headlight YJ. Most TJ models are short-wheelbase 2-door Wranglers.
The TJ remains popular with Jeep enthusiasts because of its simple design, compact size, and classic Wrangler appearance. Hothead offers select products for TJ owners looking to improve comfort, appearance, and sound control.
How to identify a TJ: Look for round headlights, a short 2-door body, and a model year from 1997 through 2006.

Jeep Wrangler LJ Unlimited: 2004-2006
The Jeep Wrangler LJ Unlimited is the long-wheelbase version of the TJ, sold from 2004 through 2006. It has two doors like the TJ but a longer body and more cargo space behind the rear seat.
The LJ is sometimes confused with the TJ because they share many design cues. The easiest way to identify an LJ is the longer body length. If your Jeep is a 2004-2006 Wrangler Unlimited with the longer wheelbase, choose LJ products.
How to identify an LJ: Look for a 2004-2006 Wrangler Unlimited with two doors and a noticeably longer rear cargo section than a standard TJ.

Jeep Wrangler YJ: 1987-1995
The Jeep Wrangler YJ was the first official Wrangler generation and ran from 1987 through 1995. It is best known for its square headlights, which make it easy to distinguish from later TJ, JK, and JL Wranglers.
YJ owners often value the simple, classic Jeep feel while still wanting comfort upgrades for heat, noise, and appearance.
How to identify a YJ: Look for square headlights and a model year from 1987 through 1995.

Jeep CJ7: 1976-1986
The Jeep CJ7 came before the Wrangler name but remains one of the most recognizable classic Jeep models. It was produced from 1976 through 1986 and has the traditional round-headlight Jeep look.
If you own a CJ7, make sure to select CJ7-specific products rather than Wrangler YJ, TJ, JK, or JL products. Fitment is not interchangeable across these generations.
How to identify a CJ7: Look for a 1976-1986 Jeep CJ7 with classic Jeep styling and round headlights. If your vehicle is newer than 1986, it is likely a Wrangler generation instead.
Why Jeep Wrangler Generations Matter
Jeep Wrangler accessories are not one-size-fits-all. Roof shape, interior panels, door count, hard top design, and body dimensions can change from one generation to another. Even within the same generation, product fitment may depend on your model year, roof type, and whether you own a 2-door or 4-door version.
That is why Hothead Headliners organizes products by vehicle generation. Selecting the correct Jeep Wrangler generation helps you find headliners, sunshades, Sound Assassin sound deadening kits, and accessories designed specifically for your vehicle.
What Is the Difference Between a JK and a JL?
The JK and JL are two different Jeep Wrangler generations. The JK covers 2007-2018 Wranglers, while the JL starts with the 2018 model year and continues as the current Wrangler generation. Because 2018 included both outgoing JK models and newer JL models, it is especially important to confirm which version you own before ordering accessories.
If your 2018 Wrangler has the newer JL body style, shop JL products. If it is the outgoing JK body style, shop JK products.
What Is the Difference Between a TJ and an LJ?
The LJ is the long-wheelbase version of the TJ Unlimited. Both are 2-door Wranglers from the 1997-2006 TJ era, but the LJ was sold from 2004-2006 and has a longer body with more cargo space. If your Wrangler Unlimited is a 2004-2006 long-wheelbase model, choose LJ products instead of standard TJ products.
